ROQUEFORT allowed as a Geographical Indication
As per notice published in the Official Gazette dated February 2, 2013, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) allowed the Geographical Indication (Appelation of Origin) for ROQUEFORT, the famous French cheese, as applied for by CONFEDERATION GENERALE DES PRODUCTEURS DE LAIT DE BREBIS ET DES INDUSTRIELS DE ROQUEFORT. Cheese under the protection of Geographical Indication "Roquefort" is subject to strict production standards and highly specific ingredients. It is originated in the region of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon, south of France, and matured in the underground of the Combalou mountains, where the cheese is exposed to the fungus Penicillium roqueforti, which gives the product its unique characteristics. Therefore, the name Roquefort can only be used to designate cheeses from said French region.
