Geographical Indications have been protected in Brazil since the enactment of Law No. 9,279/1996, which established their protection under industrial property law and granted the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) authority to regulate and grant the respective registrations.

The registration of a Geographical Indication makes it possible to recognize and protect the characteristics and origin of products from a particular region, enhancing their value, strengthening local identity, and fostering investment in the producing region.
